| The words and
phrases below are essential knowledge for all Ranger trainees.
They are not only Ranger terms. Historical terms are included to give reference and increase understanding. Basic Minbari terms are included as Minbari is essential to Ranger training and one's function at the Ranger training base at Tuzanor on Minbar. If you need information on individuals, you can check the Ranger Roster. You may find some names below give you a hyperlink to biographical data. |

| Alyt | Minbari term of rank among the warrior
caste that means roughly "Captain." Alyt is a lesser rank than
"Shai Alyt." It is the equivalent of Captain in the Earth

| Arisia 3 | Earth Alliance mining colony and home of Marcus Cole. It was attacked by the Shadows. |
| Battle of the Line | A "last defense" battle asked for by Earth's President to save time for an evacuation of Earth and prevention of genocide, a battle to save man kind. |
| Black Star | A Minbari ship destroyed by Captain Sheridan with a nuclear device |
| Centauri | , |
| chrysalis | Device constructed with a triluminary which transformed the human Sinclair into the mostly Minbari Valen and a thousand years later transformed Delenn from Minbari to mostly human, thereby closing the circle. |
| Chudomo, Third Fain of | Noble and
honored sect within the religious caste "which has served with
honor for over 500 years."3 Its members include Ashan, Lennier, and
Lovell. Not equivalent to " Tredomo which is another sect,
( see " Tredomo " ) |
| Day of the Dead | Brakiri culture states that the dead return on this day |
| De Farhurst | Minbari phrase meaning " I yield to your authority." |
| Denn'Bok | Minbari fighting pike, the traditional weapon of the Anla'shok |
| denn'sha | Minbari ritual fight to the death, combatants involved agree to take responsibility for their own death. As Minbari do not kill Minbari this removes responsibility for their death from the opponent. |

| Drakh | Servants or minions of the Shadows who left Za'Ha'Dum after its destruction and were responsible for the plague on Earth |
| Drakh plague | A nano virus created by or for the Shadows and usually delivered by the Drakh |
| Drala Fi' | Minbari name for " The Black Star ," ( see Black Star ) |

| Eighth Fane of Tredomo | Minbari term for a noble and honored sect within the religious caste which has served for over 500 years. Its members include Ashan, Lennier and Lovell . ( see spelling variant " Chudomo " ) |
| end game | Earth slang term, the final battle or the point which determines the out-come |
| Enfalli | A Ranger vessel, in 2265 assigned to Captain Gregg. Crew included Ranger David Martel as First officer, Dulann , Malcolm Bridges, and Sarah Cantrell. After Gregg was injured, Martel captained the ship briefly in a notorious retreat. |
| Entil'Zha | Entil-zha
is the one who creates or guides the forces creating the future 8
or "the One Who Shapes the Future" This title given to Ranger One, the head of the Rangers.
Some feel it is derived from Vorlon.6

| Entil'zha veni | Minbar phrase for " In Valen's name ," a part of the traditional Ranger salute |
| Epsilon 3 | Planet below Babylon 5, home of "The Great Machine," inhabited by Zathri and Draal |
| Excalibur | A fusion of Vorlon and human - Minbari technology, this vessel was one of two prototypes of a new class of destroyer ship for The Alliance and The Rangers. It is one and quarter miles long. |
| Fane |
Minbari term that roughly equates to "sect" see "Tredomo " and " Chudomo " |
| Fen | A hyperspace alien species attracted to bright shinny objects and known to mate with space vessels. This happened to the Excalibur. An alternative definition : A synonym for Babylon 5 fan coined by JMS. It is not known if they mate with him. |
| F'hurs | Minbari for " mayor " 2 |
| flarn | Minbari food, resembling a human custard |
| fortress of light | term for the role of Babylon 5 in the Shadow War, attributed to Delenn |
| F’Tach islands | . |
| flyer | Personal Minbari transport. The flyers can hold up to three people and travel within the atmosphere and in space, a Minbar type of shuttle |
| Gold Channel | A Babylon 5 communication channel to Earth's government reserved for only B5's commander. |
| gok | Minbari creature, analogous to the cat found on Earth 2 |
| Great One, The | See Z'ondar |
| Grey Council | Ruling body of Minbar - 9 members, originally three from each caste - after it was restored by Delenn (who broke it in the first place), the Council had 5 members from the worker caste and 2 each from the religious and warrior castes. |
| Hand, The | A race more powerful than the Shadows, this term is applied as they have no name. They are said to be sequestered in a "place of eternal darkness." |
| holo suit | a unique weapon which enables one to look exactly like anyone one wishes to impersonate |
| hyperspace | . |
| Ingata | Minbari war cruiser assigned to transport Branmer's body back to Minbar in 2258 |
| inquisitor | . |
| Interstellar Alliance | An alliance of races formed in 2262 composed initially of Minbari, Humans, Narns Centauri, and many of the League of Non-aligned worlds |
| Isil'Zha | "Isil-zha
usually means change, changing the future, coming of a new age 8"
and can translate
roughly as "The Future." It is also the name of the blue /
green gemstone in the center of the Ranger pin.7 see " Ranger pin " common variant spellings : Isil-zha, Isilzha, ,and Itzil'Zha |
| Isil'zha veni | Translates roughly as "The Future comes" 5, 8 |
| jumpgate | Portal in and out of hyperspace. Large ships, such as Earth Force destroyers, can form their own jump points. Most other ships must use the jumpgates that have been constructed near inhabited parts of the galaxy. |
| Kosh | A
Vorlon name used to address all Vorlons, the Vorlon Ambassadors on
Babylon 5 were Kosh Naranek and Kosh Ulkesh |
| Liandra | Originally designed for Minbari and retrofitted for other races, this Ranger vessel rumored to be haunted and cursed. Captained by Ranger David Martel in its twentieth year of service in 2264. The prior crew were all found dead on board. This has yet to be explained. |
| Mars Dome One | Home of Sarah Cantrell |
| Mora'Dum | One aspect of Ranger training is
Mora'Dum, the application of terror whereby the Ranger learns to face their
fears. Marcus referred to that aspect during his conversation with Franklin in "A Late Delivery from Avalon." |
| Minbar |
Home world of the Minbari race.
Note: Also an Islamic term for "pulpit." |
| nafak’cha | Rebirth ceremony held in response to or anticipation of a great change in one's life. It can also double as a marriage ceremony.4 |
| Naming of Names Ceremony | A traditional Minbari ceremony, where one must give a truth about themselves |

| One, The | Name used by Zathras to refer to the galaxy's 'great hope' during a terrible war against the forces of darkness. Sinclair is ' The One ' who was; Delenn, ' The One ' who is; and Sheridan is ' The One ' who will be. |
| pod, the | The station of the weapons specialist, a gunnery position, present in the Liandra |
| Prophecies of Valen | . |
| Q40 | A necessary component of jumpgate technology. The mines on Arisia 3 were an important source of Q40. It is very precious because of this use. |
| Ranger | a member of the Anla'shok |
| Ranger One | leader of the Anla'shok |
| Ranger Creed | "We live for the One. We die for the one. We walk in the dark places that no one else will enter. We stand on the bridge, and no one may pass." |
| Ranger pin | A brooch worn by Rangers, with a center stone called Isil'zha by the Minbari. Ranger pin is forged white flame and then cooled in three bowls: one of holy water, one of Minbari blood, and the third of Human blood. Two figures surround the stone. One is Minbari and the other is Human. They blend in the middle to signify the two races joining in a common struggle. 9 |

| Red Knight | A name given to Ambassador G'Kar by "Arthur" after battle together. 9 |
| Religious Caste | One of the three castes of Minbari society. The other two are Warrior and Worker. |

| Sech | Master or Teacher - title given to revered and skilled teachers |

| Shai Alyt | Minbari
term for "Commander." Equivalent to Earth General or
Admiral or Commander in Chief. see " Alyt " |
| Shag Toth | Minbari for " Soul Hunter " |
| sha neyat / sha'neyat | A liquid taken as part of Minbari ceremony. The term translates roughly as " death destroyer." The solution is distilled from a combination of flowers, fruits and grains and is poisonous to humans. During the ceremony when Jeffrey Sinclair was to become Entil’Zha, he drank more than he had intended. He was in a coma with high fever for three days after. |
| Shi-Ki | Ceremony that accompanies a new Minbari leader assuming power |
| Soul Hunter | A race that captures the soul as the body dies to add to their collection. Soul Hunters are said to be immortal and posses the ability to sense impending death. Each has a personal collection of souls with whom they communicate. Minbari fear Soul Hunters because the theft of a soul blocks reincarnation. |
| Shok'Na | Minbari for Ranger One |
| Star Fire Wheel | Starfire Wheel - Located in the Temple of Varaini, the Starfire Wheel focused the light and destructive power of the sun onto a small circle in the center of the Temple. In the days before Valen, the Minbari settled disputes among the clans and determined which caste should rule by requiring the leaders to enter the Starfire Wheel. The one who so believed in his clan or caste that he was willing to die for it in the burning light of the Wheel won the right for his caste to rule. |

| Star Killer | A
name given to John Sheridan after he destroyed the Black Star, a Minbari flagship,
during the Earth -Minbari War. After his Captain was lured into a trap,
Sheridan sent a distress signal which luring the Black Star and three heavy cruisers asteroid field of nukes. This act was considered dishonorable by the Minbari. |
| Star Riders | A clan of the Warrior Caste, see " Warrior Caste," Neroon was a member of the Star Riders |
| Tak'cha , The | An ancient alien race, seemingly wiped from the
memory and records of the Minbari, Delenn knew nothing of them
( see Zarwin ) |
| Taralenn II / Taralenn 2 | Minbari penal colony |
| Temple of Valen | A temple in Tuzanor which at one time had a small group of Rangers based at there who had kept alive the principles and ideals of the Anla Shok under Lenonn. |
| Third Principal of Sentient Life, The | Minbari principle, " the capacity for self-sacrifice : the conscious ability to override evolution and self-preservation for a cause, a friend or a loved one." |
| Tredomo, Eighth Fane of | Minbari
sect Turval is of the 8th Fane of Tredomo. Not
equivalent to "Chudomo." see Chudomo |
| Ti'Lar | Minbari poetry used in song to evoke new ideas and recall old memories |
| Trigati, The | Minbari war cruiser commanded by Sineval during the Earth-Minbari War. After the war, the ship disappeared into self-imposed exile. The rogue vessel became a legend that lasted 10 years until its destruction off B5 by fellow Minbari. |
| triluminary | Triangular object, only three are thought to existence They glow in the presence of a descendent of Valen, can scan memory, restore a missing memory, create Chrysalis cocoons, as they did for Delenn and Valen; and to stun. An example of the latter was the stunning of the guards who protected Branmer's body on B5. Delenn and Valen both used triluminaries to form their Chrysalis 's |
| Tuzanor / Tuzenor (1) | A city found on Minbar. It is site of an ancient battle and is because of this, known as "The City of Sorrows" due to the very heavy casualties during the battle, the site of the headquarters of the Interstellar Alliance, and the site of the main Ranger training school. The word is from the ancient Na'sen dialect of the religious caste, and it is said that 'to dream in the City of Sorrows' means to dream of a better future. Said to have been Valen's favorite place on Minbar. |
| Ulkesh, Kosh | The Vorlon ambassador to Minbar. Subsequently replaced Kosh Naranek as ambassador to Babylon 5 after Kosh's Naranek death. Killed before the end of Shadow War on B5. Sheridan gave the order and lead the team. See " Kosh " |
| Valen | "The
Minbari not born of Minbari." Originally the Human, Jeffrey
Sinclair, Valen traveled 1000 years back in time with the Babylon 4
station to aid the Minbari in the first war against the Shadows.
After the Shadows were defeated, Valen ended the fighting among the clans. He reorganized Minbari into three castes and created the Grey Council. He also created the Rangers to protect Minbar and to prepare for the Shadow war which would come in the future. He is the most revered of all Minbari. The Rangers would later name a ship after him, the Valen. |

| Walkers | One of the races referred to as "The First Ones." They followed Lorien; however, it is indeterminate as to if they preceded the Vorlons and Shadows. |

| Wind Swords | The most militant clan in the warrior caste. They sheltered Jha'dur a.k.a " Death Walker," the last of the Dilgar race, in exchange for weapons of her creation subsequently provided to Grey Council for the start of the Earth-Minbari War. |
| Worker Caste | . |
| White Star | The main ship of the Ranger fleet, which combines Vorlon and Minbari technology. It can outfight and outrun ships more than twice its size. The partly organic technology learned from the Vorlons enables the ship to adapt to weapons fired at it. The White Stars are the only ships of their size that can form their own jump points. |
| Yedor | Capital city of Minbar |
| Zarwin | One of the Tak'cha, who served Valen Zarwin misunderstood the teachings of Valen and ordered the Tak'cha to attack the helpless races that were not interested in helping with either side of the last Shadow War. Zarwin claimed that those that did not follow Valen into fire, darkness, and death did not deserve to follow. They must precede him. Valen banished the Tak'cha from his presence, and they returned to their homeworld. They never understood their error. 2 |
| Zathras | A name used by all Zathri . One " Zathras " traveled back 1000 years into the past with Sinclair to aid in the Shadow war and was present on B4 with the B5 crew to aid in its time transport for the same conflict. ( See " Zathri " ) |
| Zathri | Alien race of unknown origin, all are clones, all are called "Zathri ," indigenous to Epsilon 3 ( See " Zathras " ) |
| Z’Ha’Dum | Home planet of the Shadows. Destroyed in 2261 by Lyta Alexander, the ultimate Vorlon weapon. 'The word "z'ha'dum," with the broken " zha ," is the death of the future, or the dark future.8' |
| Zha | "Zha is the usual reference for the future, whose meaning changes depending on whether it's a suffix or a prefix, and what it's up against.8" |

A named used on Babylon 5 for the marketplace.
Also an Earth noun ( zo·ca·lo, plural zo·ca·los.) This is a town square or plaza, especially in Mexico. The word is derived from the American Spanish "zócalo," from the Spanish, "socle," and from the Italian "zoccolo." |
