Susan Ivanova is a Russian Jew. Born in St Petersburg in Russia on the 30th August 2230. Educated in Europe. Her mother Sofie was a telepath, a fact she didn't reveal until she was in her 30s, not even to her own family. Always afraid that the Psi Corps would find out and take her in, take her away from her husband and two young children, Ganya and Susan. When the corps did find out they gave her 3 choices, join the Psi Corps, go to prison or take drugs for the rest of your life that inhibit telepathic abilities. She had no choice but to take the drugs and slowly she began to lose her life, she
committed suicide. Her mother's death effected the family and had a profound effect on Susan. She hates the Psi Corps with a vengeance. Susan Ivanova joined Earthforce after the death of her brother Ganya, who did during the Earth-Minbari war. She became a skilled pilot and served among other places under the command of Captain Sheridan at the transfer point on Io. Later she was to meet up with Captain Sheridan again when he took command of Babylon 5. While serving her first year on Babylon 5 she got a call from home, her father Andrei was dying, it was a very painful time for Ivanova, she had lost
a lot of the closeness they once had when she joined Earthforce against her fathers wishes, and he was her last remaining close relative. When he died she found her religion again, something she had let go of for some time. Ivanova had already been on the station a whole year as a Lieutenant Commander. When Sheridan came aboard, he immediately promoted her to the rank of Commander. Although she didn't know it until a few days later. They have a long standing mutual respect for each other and a good friendship. Michael Garibaldi the chief of security also became a very good friend to Ivanova, almost like a brother. Her romantic relationships have been few and far between. Back on earth she had a relationship with Malcolm Biggs, who later turned up on the station looking for her, to use her in his sick hatred of aliens. She was sickened by his change in personality, or maybe he had always been like that, she simply didn't have any idea. While aboard Babylon 5 Ivanova fell in love with the stations resident telepath, something she tried to fight from the first day she saw her in c and c. The feeling was mutual, Talia's feelings for Ivanova were always warm, but Ivanova would try to avoid her because she was a telepath. When asked by Captain Sheridan what she thought of Talia, she simply said "she's interesting.." giving nothing away. She couldn't let another telepath get close and discover her secret, that she is a latent telepath. Something that came up later when she was starting to do things no normal mind could do, even puzzling the likes of Draal. Which makes you realize she is definitely more than just a latent telepath. Eventually Talia broke through Susan's walls and they became close friends and eventually lovers. Until Talia was exposed as Psi Corps plant, she didn't know it herself, but they implanted a personality in her that would come out if a certain message was sent to her mind. So the real person would be destroyed and the spy would live on to tell all the secrets she had discovered. Later they were told that Talia had been dissected in Psi Corps labs, something that chilled Susan's very being and made her hate the Psi Corps even more. Ivanova never blamed Talia, she loved her and it just felt like another person close to her had died. After Talia 'died' Ivanova retreated back into her shell, focusing on her career only. Various attempts to get to know her better by ranger Marcus Cole were ignored, she simply did not want to know. She was still getting over her hurt and didn't want to get hurt again. Then she had a serious accident, and Marcus gave his life to save hers. Ivanova couldn't deal with what had happened and this was, in a way, the end for Ivanova. She left soon after to Captain her own ship, something she had always wanted to do. She's beautiful, Intelligent and loyal to her career and her friends. Ivanova can often seem serious and stern, but mostly when she's off duty she likes to have a good time, she has the best sense of humour and enjoys the odd glass of vodka. But it is her cutting sense of humour that she is very well known for ... and is always ready with the ironic one liner. Later in life Ivanova became General Ivanova, but the position lacked any meaning for Susan. So when Delenn offered her a job on Minbar working as head of the Rangers she thought about it for a short while, but it didn't take her long to realize were her heart was. She left Earth behind to take over Sheridan's Role, not only in work but also by being some comfort to Delenn after Sheridan died. "Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future, and it changed us. It taught us that we have to create the future, or others will do it for us. It showed us we have to care for one another, because if we don't, who will? And that true strength comes from the most unlikely places. Mostly though, I think it gave us hope for new beginnings...even for people like us." - Entil-zah Susan Ivanova |
