| The Legend Of The Rangers : To live and Die In Starlight |
| Marcus Cole
was born in the year 2226 A.D. on Arisia 3, a Q40 mining colony on the
farthest edge of explored space. He grew up in a home on a station above
a poisonous, radioactive atmosphere and active volcanoes. To him Earth
was just a place "that sent books and vids and took 30% of their
income." The eldest of 2 sons, Marcus was a talented pilot who, after compulsory military service during the Minbari War as an intelligence gatherer, dreamt of a life elsewhere. This dream faded after his father's illness and subsequent death left him in charge of his parents' legacy...their failing mining business. A visit from his brother William introduced him to the Rangers. Although Marcus made light of it, William tried to warn him of a coming attack by an alien enemy called "Shadows." He also asked Marcus to sell Q40 (a necessary component for jumpgate technology) to the Rangers and allow them to establish a small discreet listening post on the colony to monitor Shadow activity in the sector. Though Marcus agreed to do business with the Rangers, he refused them a listening post. While out on a tour of the refinery with his brother, they stumbled upon a Shadow attack on their colony. William's ship crashed after Marcus stubbornly refused to flee the colony before checking for non-existent survivors. William died in Marcus' arms, but not before extracting a promise from his brother to find Jeffrey Sinclair on Minbar and finish what William had begun. Escaping the colony with nothing but the shirt on his back, Marcus traveled to the Ranger training compound in Tuzanor, Minbar. He joined the Rangers after speaking with Ambassador Sinclair the leader (Entil'Zha) of the group. After a year's training Marcus took part in an ill fated flight assignment testing the new White Star craft along with Sinclair and his fiancée Catherine Sakai. On the maiden flight of the ships, Sakai was lost in a time rift. A bereaved Sinclair gave an ancient Minbari Fighting Pike (Denn'Bok) intended for Catherine into Marcus' safe keeping. His next assignment took him to another training camp on a Drazi colony. When the Centauri placed blockade mines around the planet Marcus volunteered to run the blockade and traveled to Babylon 5 in search of help. While there he fell hopelessly in love with the second in command of the station, Commander Susan Ivanova. Although he managed to achieve a friendship with her (going so far as to confess he was still a virgin), he was never able to break through her reserve but he never stopped trying. After 2 years service to the Rangers while stationed aboard Babylon 5 (encompassing both the Shadow War and Clark's War), he died a hero's death at the end of 2261 by transferring his life energy (via an alien device) to a gravely wounded Susan Ivanova. Per her instructions his body was placed in Cryonic freeze until the discovery of a new "resuscitation" technology could revive him.
