Montoya distinguished himself in Ranger service and rose quickly to a captaincy. His special skills in close combat and survival led to his becoming a teacher of Anla Shok recruits. Montoya was known for his insight into the young Rangers under his command. This was exemplified in his handling of Ranger Findell, finding a purpose he could fulfill rather than letting him destroy himself or be dismissed from the Rangers.

When Delenn as Entil Zha requested the assignment of her former aide Lennier to White Star 27 for training, Montoya did not question her orders. He was well aware though that Lennier was more experienced in combat than the other trainees, and even said he was not sure he could teach him more than Lennier had already learned serving with Sheridan and Delenn. Montoya found himself impressed with Lennier’s abilities and his quick thinking, particularly in his saving of Findell.
