Tannier of the Minbari Religious Caste was one of two trainees invited
by Sech Turval and Sech
Durhann to accompany them on a visit to Babylon
5. Tannier had drawn their attention by laughing at Turval’s and
Durhann’s conversation while he was meant to be meditating. At Durhann’s
reprimand that no one had an inner voice that smiled, Tannier replied,
"I do."
Tannier’s impulsive nature led him to speak to Entil Zha Delenn without being spoken to first or invited to speak. This earned him another reprimand, but drew Delenn’s attention to the young trainee. Given leave to explore the Station with Ranger Trainee Rastenn the two found themselves in Down Below where they heard a woman’s screams. Rastenn was reluctant to intervene and left, but Tannier believed that it was a Ranger’s duty to save lives and rushed in. The woman escaped but the thugs who had threatened her brutally beat Tannier and left him unconscious as a message to the Station authorities. Tannier was treated in the Station Med Lab. As soon as he was sufficiently recovered to walk he was sent back into Down Below as part of his Ranger Training. He was to undergo the Mora ‘Dum – the Application of Terror. As Delenn described it, this was "facing fear. The kind that cripples, the kind that destroys, not from without but within." As this had been declared a matter for the Anla Shok, Station Security stood clear while other Rangers took out the subordinate members of the gang, leaving Tannier to face the gang’s leader who had had him beaten. In the ensuing fight, which Sech Turval and Sech Durhann used as a teaching lesson to other trainees on the nature of bullies, Tannier was the victor having faced his fear and overcome it. When asked by Sech Turval what he felt for his foe, Tannier said, "Pity". When asked, "Whom does your name belong to? History? The World?", Tannier replied, "It belongs to me." Delenn noted to Durhann, that Tannier had handled the Denn ‘Bok well, almost as if taught by Durhann himself – something reserved in Minbari training for advanced and exceptional candidates. Durhann merely smiled and said, "Yes he did, didn’t he." Delenn requested that when Tannier’s Ranger training was complete he be assigned to the House Guards for the new Presidential home on Minbar. |
