Turval remained Anla ‘Shok Na until handing over the position to Jeffrey Sinclair. It was he who was instrumental in explaining Ranger history to Sinclair, persuading him to take the post and naming him as Entil ‘Zha according to prophecy. He helped Sinclair with the reformation of the Rangers when all but 34 of the remaining Rangers resigned over Human membership and the admission of Minbari of all three castes. Turval was one of the few who knew the truth about Sinclair being Valen.

In Ranger training Sech Turval was meditation master, a discipline he sometimes enforced with the use of a light weight reed cane when candidates seemed restless or fell asleep. In spite of his age he was adept with the fighting pike and bested Marcus Cole as a demonstration of the importance of meditation in remaining focused. Meditation, he said, will teach a Ranger all that he needs in all disciplines: "He needs to know what he truly is at the level beyond thoughts and words, at the level of absolute silence out of which comes all that is truly meaningful."

As well as Marcus, whom Turval knew had joined the Rangers seeking a way to atone for his brother’s loss, Turval took a special interest in those others who might be troubled or have joined the Rangers for the wrong reasons. It led him to speak to Delenn, who was also a close friend, of Lennier’s trying too hard, pushing himself too much, as if trying to prove something to himself or someone. Turval promised to let her know if Lennier continued in this way and to be there if she needed someone to talk to. Turval’s wisdom was also shown is his helping the two trainee Rangers Tannier and Rastenn deal with their different fears after an incident on the Babylon 5 Station.
